A Closer Look
Michael McGowan is a seasoned real estate professional with 30 years of experience in both public and private investing. He has extensive expertise across a variety of property sectors, including “boots on the ground” knowledge of assets in leading global cities. Mr. McGowan joined Bard Consulting in 2016 initially to advise on Asian investment activity. His role has substantially expanded to assist clients with investment strategies covering traditional property sectors as well as emerging or “niche” sectors like life science and data centers. Between 2009 and April 2016, Mr. McGowan was the lead Portfolio Manager of the Forward (now Salient) International Real Estate Fund, a public mutual fund invested primarily in European and Asian real estate investment trusts (REITs). In this capacity he spent much of his time overseas, meeting with the executive management and on-site staff of several hundred global REITs and personally visiting several thousand properties. In 2013, Mr. McGowan won the Lipper Award for Best Performing International Real Estate Fund. Mr. McGowan was also a portfolio manager of several other US REIT mutual funds during this period. From 2005 to 2009, Mr. McGowan was a REIT analyst and Portfolio Manager for Kensington Investment Group, where he analyzed and invested in both US and international REITs. Prior to his career in public real estate, Mr. McGowan worked for RREEF (now DWS) as the Head of Research – Industrial and Office Properties. From 1995 to 2005, he assisted in the underwriting of market conditions for the acquisition and valuation of more than $5 billion of U.S. properties for pension fund clients.
