Owen Announces New RERC Project
William H. Owen, CRE,
president, Real Estate
Research Consultants
(RERC), Orlando, Florida,
announced that the firm
recently was retained by the
Florida High Tech Corridor
Council and the University of Central
Florida Office for Research and
Commercialization (UCF) to document the
local economic impacts stemming from the
increasing pool of research dollars being
awarded to the university’s faculty members
and researchers. In 2008, the total research
grants at UCF totaled almost $130 million,
an increase of 230 percent since 1999. RERC
also is analyzing the economic benefits to
Central Florida of the seven UCF-operated
technology business incubators.

Duncum Goes Back to School
CRE John Duncum,
chairman, Duncum Business
Ventures, Ltd., Bryan, Texas,
is going back to school to
earn his second master’s
degree—this one at Abilene
Christian University in Texas
in a program called Conflict Resolution.
Duncum, who shares an interest in dispute
resolution, played a major role in creating
the school’s newly opened Center for
Conflict Resolution, which also provides
offices for professors and mediators, and
classrooms.

Boecher's Firm Merges
Peter S. Boecher, CRE, AICP,
ASLA, senior associate, TBG
Partners, Houston, recently
announced the merger of
TBG, Texas’ largest landscape
architecture and planning
firm, with Vernon G. Henry
& Associates (VHA), an urban land planning
firm, also in Houston. VHA’s current
employees have relocated to TBG’s Houston
office, increasing the staff to 35. The merger
signifies enhanced integration of site planning
and landscape architecture and
expands the company’s services in comprehensive
city and regional planning, site
selection and land use analysis.

Hornsby Opens New Firm
Paul Hornsby, CRE, MAI,
SRA, Austin, Texas, and
Brent Dickey recently
announced the opening of
dh Business Advisors, a full
service business valuation
and advisory firm with
offices in Houston and Austin. The new
firm, which will focus on small to mid-size
businesses, provides business valuation and
advisory services for financial reporting, litigation
support, tax reporting and ad valorem
tax to private and public companies
reporting under GAAP, as well as accounting
professionals, attorneys and government
entities. Hornsby remains president of Paul
Hornsby & Company, which focuses primarily
on litigation services.

William H. Brownfield,

an educational webinar
sponsored by BOMA
International and Buildings
Magazine called “Escalations Made Easy:
Understanding Gross Ups, Expense Caps
and Capital Amortizations.” Along with
partner Larry Mayerhofer, Brownfield
addressed more than 800 attendees on the
subject of escalations—commercial
tenants’ share of a building’s operating
expenses. Brownfield is considered a
national expert on the subject of
escalations, which often can become the
subject of landlord/tenant disputes.
